The Basics
The game brings a little into the future from its previous versions, say a hundred years or so. In the free play mode you choose form one of the many civilizations and start with just an ancient town centre and a few workers. Order these villagers/workers to gather resources for you, using which you can form more and more structures and advance to new age altogether at the macro level. In the third version the civilizations are usually European (British, German, French, Russians etc.) with their own characteristic structures and armies.
What sets this version apart from the previous one is the campaign mode. You chose a hero from one civilization and complete different missions in a story like mode. Because the focus has shifted on more advanced civilizations in AOE III, the campaigns have also changed and have consequently become more lengthy and eventful.
